Epping Cricket Club Under 11s v Stansted Hall on Sun 20 May 2012 at 9:30am
Epping Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
After a delayed start to the season due to the terrible weather that has plagued the early season all over the country the Epping Under 11's were the first team at the club to appear at Lower Bury Lane on a morning felt to be so cold by some that it resulted in possibly the most well-insulated scorers seen at Lower Bury Lane in some years, with Julian Knight, fresh from cheering on West Ham to play-off victory the previous day donning fur hat and gloves to keep his hands warm while counting the runs.
However, despite the cold conditions Epping made a strong start with Harry and Freddy picking up wickets in the early overs as reward for some very disciplined bowling. However, Messrs Sturgen, Akron and Pilcher strode to the crease for the away team and batted with great maturity sharing some very handy stands of 27 and 38 for the third and fourth wickets to further the away team's cause before they were broken by key wickets from Jack and Theo which helped restrict the visitors total. However, not to be defeated Pilcher batted to the end, guiding his team to a competitive total of 91 and withstanding a strong finish from Epping's bowlers
After the break where tea and toast provided by Jenny Page was the order of the day to keep players and spectators warm in the arctic conditions more often associated with alpine skiing than the traditional summer weather associated with cricket. When play resumed the Stansted bowling attack set about making life very difficult for the Epping batsmen, with some excellent bowling and fielding leaving Epping reeling at at 3-3. However, captain Harry Knight and debutant Teddy Miller came together in the middle to share a partnership of 50 to put the home side on a firmer footing with a combination of staunch defence, good shot selection and intelligent running. This partnership looked to have swung the contest well in Epping's favour. However, when Zobel broke the partnership with an excellent delivery the game was back in the balance. Freddy Knight then joined Harry (no relation) at the crease to help see Harry through to retiring on 20 after a genuine captain's innings. Theo Harris and Freddy then set about completing the chase set up by Harry and Teddy, although the going became more difficult as they faced some very accurate bowling and had some expansive strokes thwarted by some Bairstow-like fielding from the visiting team, bringing them very much back into contention which ultimately claimed the key wicket of Freddy Knight. However, by then Epping had progressed to 87, which again could have left only one possible winner of the contest. Not to be defeated at all easily Stansted then regrouped and dug in for the final 2 overs, pushing Epping to the 5th ball of the final over with some very tight bowling and committed fielding, and when another Epping wicket fell with the scores tied on 91 and only 3 balls remaining, Jack Winch strode to the crease knowing 1 run would do it. Having seen off his first ball Epping clinched victory with a wide, which was perhaps not a fitting finish to what was a very exciting match between two evenly matched teams, who both played some excellent cricket throughout the game.
